Mike Nelson curated by Samuele Piazza
Binario 1 | OGR - Officine Grandi Riparazioni
For his solo show at OGR Mike Nelson will be producing a new immersive installation, specifically conceived for the venue of Binario 1 and its former industrial spaces. Mike Nelson is known internationally for his complex installations and sculptures. Through the appropriation and exposure of everyday materials and finds, his work transforms exhibition spaces into mysterious environments, within which hidden or unforeseen elements beguilingly or unsettlingly appear and block the viewer’s movement. The commission for OGR will take over Binario's 1 nave completely, transforming it into a "different space", inviting the audience to enter an environment that will change the usual space coordinates.
In the course of his career Nelson has created massive environmental installations aimed precisely at subverting the sense of place of the spectator – the most famous is perhaps the one made for the Great Britain Pavilion at the Venice Biennale in 2011. In that occasion the artist put together pieces of reconstructed spaces in order to create a complex labyrinth-collage to transport the visitor from the Venice lagoon to a historical and decadent palace of the city of Istanbul. More recently, in Montecarlo, instead, he has entirely repainted with an ultramarine blue painting the corridors, the stairs, the rooms – and everything in them – of a sevenstorey building that houses the premises of a Swiss bank currently under renovation.
