Radio Free Europe

Opening the 06th of July

As the former headquarters of the broadcaster Radio Free Europe, the FB Englischer Garten housed the CIA-funded propaganda station from 1960 until the mid-1990s. Radio Free Europe regarded its mission as providing information not only to US soldiers but also to listeners behind the Iron Curtain. The building lies in the environmentally protected Englisher Garten, and now serves as a faculty library for LMU Munich. The artist Lawrence Abu Hamdan has created an audio project here to commemorate the historic radio station. His acoustic intervention examines the politics of the voice and the loss of sound in the former studios of Radio Free Europe. Hamdan’s project considers the studio building’s transformation from a place in which “strong voices” were recorded to be beamed out across the world, into its current state as a place of contemplation dedicated to researching media ideologies.
