MISSION

The Stedelijk Museum enriches people’s lives with modern and contemporary art and design.

VISION

The Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam is the place where everyone can discover and experience modern and contemporary visual art and design. Our collection, exhibitions, publications, research and educational programmes offer unique and compelling insights into today’s world, reflecting on broader social issues, as well as those that influence our individual lives.

In creating interactions between audiences and art, we draw inspiration from dialogues with artists. We explore the complex issues of past, present and future – as defined by artists and signalled by ourselves – to deliver a programme that inspires. These activities are led by our active approach to sharing, caring for and renewing our renowned collection.

Within the Netherlands, we continually adapt and refine our role of pioneer in the field of art and design; internationally, our distinguished collection and exhibition programme enables us to act as a catalyst. We investigate and help to shape new directions and debate conventions rather than uphold them. The Stedelijk has always been, and remains, an advocate of fresh ideas and experimentation, encouraging critical discourse and a better understanding of the present through art and design.
