GOOD TO TALK - Performance – Annabel Daou

  • 02:30 - 05:00 Uhr
  • 09.09.2017
  • Kantine am Berghain

n this ongoing project, members of the public are solicited to partake in an intimate interaction in which they present their palms and receive their fortunes transcribed onto paper for a fee of 10 Euros. The reading/writing is entirely silent. It is structured around two questions: “Where are you coming from?” and “Where are you going to?” The project explores the notions of trust, intimacy, power, and exchange. Considered in a social and historical context, the figure of the fortune-teller raises questions about belief and desire as well as class and cross-cultural interaction. Fortune telling is illegal in many places including New York City (however, not in Berlin). In the depths of Dante’s Inferno, the fortune-tellers walk with their heads on backwards, punished for presuming to see the future.

The artist will offer her services for 2 to 3 hours. Waiting time may occur. Please be patient and have a 10 euro bill at hand.

A second session will take place on Sunday, Sept. 10, from midnight.

Annabel Daou was born in Lebanon and lives and works in New York City. Her work takes place at the intersection of writing, speech, and non-verbal modes of communication. Her paper- and tape-based constructions, sound pieces, and performances explore the language of power, intimacy and self-encounter. Among her interests is our intangible relationship to time and presence. Daou’s work is often constructed out of lightweight, seemingly ephemeral materials that both indicate and resist a sense of objecthood. Her performances and sound pieces frequently involve interactions with random strangers, and the process of asking questions and recording or transcribing the answers. In Germany, she is represented by Galerie Tanja Wagner.
